What One Should Know About Autism Southern California

By Angel Dudley

Autism is a collection of developmental problems that are collectively referred to as autism spectrum disorder. The condition occurs during early childhood, before the child attains the age of 3. The various symptoms and how severe the condition is are varied, but all forms of the disorder interfere with the ability of children to interact effectively with others. When considering autism Southern California residents need to get as much information about it as possible.

All children that have the condition will likely have problems in three key areas of development- behavior, language and social interaction. Nevertheless, since level of severity and symptoms are varied a great deal, it would not be strange to have children with the condition displaying different behaviors. In severe cases, those affected will not be able to communicate at all. How they interact with others will also be affected a great deal.

There are kids that show signs of the disorder when they are still infants. On the other hand, there are those that will undergo normal development after birth, only for them to change after some time. They all of a sudden become aggressive, withdrawn and could even end up losing their already acquired language skills. Some of the common symptoms in children include them resisting cuddling or holding, they fail to respond to their name and they are also likely to have poor eye contact.

It usually is not very easy for children affected to share experiences with fellow friends. If for example one reads for such children and asks them to point at images from the same book, chances are that they may not be able to. Early development of their social skills is important for language and social development later in life.

In the course of their development and growth, the children are bound to learn to engage with others in addition to showing few disturbances when it comes to their behavior. Those that have the least severe problems may eventually lead normal lives. Others will however find it difficult improving on their social or language skills. Behavioral problems will get worse.

The rate at which children develop is very varied. Some children grow slowly, others very fast. Therefore, simply because a child has taken slightly longer to grow and develop is not an implication that they suffer from autism. Whenever one has such concerns, the doctor should be consulted at once so that a conclusive conclusion is made. It is also important to remember that as much as possible, early treatment should be considered as it increases chances of recovery.

The cause of this condition is unclear. However, the environment and genetics play a very pivotal role. There are a number of genes involved which make children more susceptible. Some of the genes tend to affect communication of brain cells. While some genetic problems are inherited, others happen instantaneously. There is currently no researched evidence to ascertain if viral infections and air pollutants trigger autism.

When considering autism Southern California residents ought to also consider risk factors. On a comparative basis, boys are four times as likely to contract the condition as girls. It also runs in the family, such that once one family member suffers from it, those born after that have increased probability of suffering from it. Children born by parents that are older are more at risk.
