Tips To Work As A Soup Kitchen Volunteer New Hampshire

By John Murray

Giving unpaid help is a great way to serve the community. There are many charitable groups that can greatly benefit from added manpower. This includes soup kitchens. Since these establishments are open throughout the year, they rely on people who can be available on a regular basis. Here are some tips to keep in mind when you want to become a soup kitchen volunteer New Hampshire.

Carefully choose the clothes that you are going to wear and the shoes. Your shoes should be comfortable, such that you can stay on your feet for long periods of time. In addition, wear comfortable clothes that are not revealing. They should be clothes that you do not mind getting dirt on or stains, since your clothes can easily get dirty while you are working. You will get gloves, an apron and hair nets.

No need to carry valuable stuff, if you do not want them to get stolen. Also consider that your valuables could get damaged. Leaving your stuff in the car is also not a good idea, in case someone breaks into your car. As much as there is security in the parking area, someone might get past the security and steal from your car.

You need to speed up how you do things when working. You don't want to keep people waiting for long periods of time, so work fast. Alert the people in the kitchen when the food is almost running out. This way, they can refill your serving bowls in time. In addition, be alert if you are the ones dishing out the tickets, so that no one picks up extra tickets without your authorization.

When you are serving the food, make sure that you are fair about how you do it. Serve the same size portions to everyone. You should also check the food and make sure that it is fresh. It should not be stale or moldy. If there are multiple deserts, let the people choose what to take.

Observe high standards of hygiene at all times. For instance, if food happens to fall of the spoon when serving, do not put it back in the serving containers. Throw it away. In addition, if you are sick, then do not show up for work, since you could easily spread germs to other people in the place and the patrons.

Check your attitude and try as much as possible to be in a positive mood. Greet the people and address them respectfully. In case you complete your job, you can grab some food and share a table with some of the patrons as you talk with them.

There are so many ways that you can help out in this place. You do not just have to serve food. You can choose to work in the kitchen and cook the food. You can also do the work of opening up cans and boxes or even raising funds to keep the kitchen running. You can also wash up the dishes and clean up the area or organize the place.
