Understand Mike Huckabee Policy Solutions

By Jana Serrano

The former Arkansas Governor, Southern Baptist minister, best-selling author, and radio and television talk show host is now a contender for the Republican nomination. His earlier bid for the nomination was during the 2008 election cycle, when he was the strongest of the 'also-rans'. Therefore it behooves all voters to understand Mike Huckabee policy solutions in order to get a feel for the man and his beliefs.

Voters can get a good idea of Huckabee's positions and capabilities by examining his record as governor. One impressive feat was achieving a balanced budget and a record surplus while cutting or eliminating many state taxes, including private and corporate capital gains taxes.

During his tenure, individual income went up while welfare rolls declined by over 45%. Although his former support of the Common Core curriculum worries many, he was a staunch supporter of home schooling and initiated the first charter schools in the state.

As a pastor and as a politician, he has championed the sanctity of life (as Governor, he abolished partial birth abortion in Arkansas). He is on record as wishing to see 'Roe vs. Wade' repealed. He was consistently tough on crime and saw the homicide rate decrease sharply while he was in office. He supported (and still does) the traditional family as the basis for a stable society, and opposed (and still does) same-sex marriage.

To know where he stands today, voters can check out his campaign website. His positions are clearly set out, and the viewer can click on various 'planks' of his platform to explore areas of interest or concern. All statements he has made since throwing his hat in the ring can be considered campaign speech, since even at this early stage the race is on.

Huckabee believes that science on man-made climate change is 'not settled' enough to justify a war on carbon. He is a strong believer in US energy independence and supports both traditional and 'green' energy solutions. He believes that abortion is wrong and that decisions on this controversial subject should be made at the state level. He supports only adult stem cell research and treatment.

He strongly advocates the repeal of Obamacare and the creation of a more workable and effective health care system. He oppose gun control and supports an armed citizenry. He stands with the nation of Israel and considers Jerusalem to be that nation's capital. He would abolish the IRS and bring in the Fair Tax. He wants to hold government bureaucrats accountable for performance and waste, particularly where the welfare of veterans is concerned. He thinks America should lead the free world and have military superiority.

Voters need to pay attention during the campaign process, since the issues are complex and no one wants a candidate who wavers over important points in order to please his voter base. More and more people believe that today is a time for a leader, not a politician. And many say that the country cannot rely on Congress but need a strong, principled president.
