Attention is given to emotional, cognitive, social, peer, family, educational, and developmental components. The practitioner does not make the final decision alone, both the customer and the psychiatrist participates.

The exercise involves numerous other parties like former private physicians, teachers, family members, and juvenile courts in some circumstances. All activities of the practitioner are expected to be in the best interest children being helped. A mental state examination may be necessary during the assessment. To reach conclusive solution, psychiatric and health history of fore parents is obtained.

Common treatment options are family, psychodynamic, problem-solving, cognitive-behavior, behavior, and problem-solving therapies. Parents may also be placed under training programs and/or conventional medication may be administered. All external influences such as schools, pediatricians, social agencies, juvenile courts, and primary care physicians are also counseled accordingly about the situation.
