Tips For A Non Lethal Conflict Resolution

By Serena Price

Violence is never the best way to resolve conflicts. Showing power or might to settle a dispute is just a barbaric method that has already been phased out. To people of the modern world, it is better to follow the steps to a non lethal conflict resolution. Here are the steps that the person can use to resolve an issue without violence.

First of all, the person has to cool down. This means that the two parties should not try to resolve the issue when there is someone who is angry. Otherwise, this will just aggravate everything and might lead to some conclusions that are irreparable. In this case, take a time out. Or, the two could just agree to meet again the next day.

The issue should be properly described. The party involved with the issue should be able to describe it using their own words. They have to describe how the other party acted and how they reacted to it. Each party will have a different view on this issue. They should never say that a single person's account is wrong.

There is surely a reason behind the issue. It is important for all involved to describe what happened why this issue became a big one. Describe the first thing that happened in detail, in one's own words. It might be that this problem stemmed from a minor disagreement or difference in opinion.

Consider the feelings of the people involved. For every action, there is a corresponding reaction from the one at the receiving end of the action. It is a must to describe one's feelings over the matter. Make sure to describe whatever that feeling is with all honesty. There should be no one blamed during this part, though.

When one of the involved parties is talking, it is a must to listen. Listen respectfully and carefully to the words of the one talking. When the two parties have listened to each other, they might find out that there was just a misunderstanding. If this is the case, they can surely find an easier way to resolve the said problem.

It is also a given to brainstorm a solution for the issue. Everyone might be trying to come up with solutions and that is okay. In fact, it is highly recommended to be creative. Try to affirm with each other's ideas or be open to other ideas too. Go through all the suggested ideas and choose the one which the two parties are willing to try.

Try out the solution. If the are some parts to the solution that the two cannot agree on, be willing to compromise and negotiate. Give in the best effort in the solution that the two parties have come up with.

Do not be discouraged when the solution that they have worked out does not produce any non lethal conflict resolution. They have to brainstorm again then. They should look for another solution that they can use. If it ever comes to the point that there really is no solution possible for it, the two should just agree to disagree on that matter. However, they should not let their relationship break just because of this.
