Streamline The Process With Online CEU Courses For MFT Licensees

By Marissa Velazquez

MFT license holders can choose from a plethora of websites to get online CEU courses for MFT license maintenance. These Continuing Educations Units must be taken by practitioners in most states to extend their licenses. Drug abuse and addiction counselors, social workers and other therapists, nurses and nurse's aids all need to do this work. They can log into any of these sites and do the work and sign off.

First, make sure that the site has the relevant information for the license in question. Psychologists and health care workers will need to ensure that the classes are relevant to the state they live in. Search on the relevant state and degree or license and the proper site will come up. Watch for sites that offer a lot. They may seem to have everything, but dig deep to be sure.

Look at the topics listed on the site. A lot of sites serve more than just one population, so they will have classes for nurse's aids and human resources workers. For MFTs, one can find classes on human sexuality from gender identity to sexual healing. Addiction counseling could be covered, as well as how addiction is addressed in therapy. Home violence, partner abuse and elder abuse are also topics covered.

Once a site has been chosen, take a look at the test. It is usually free so it can be used as a study guide. That way, MFTs can study directly from the test. What costs money is the actual reading. At the very least, a full outline of the course will be available.

The process is very straightforward. The format is simple: for one CEU or Continuing Education Unit, the person taking the course is required to sit in a class for one hour, or watch a video for the same time. Alternately, if the student reads four to five thousand words, that is sufficient.

Block out time, find the best site and search for the desired topics. The actual reading material will be available for review on the site. Then take the exam and have it scored. Passing grades are between 70 and 75 percent. A lot of the sites allow a retake of the test up to 6 tries, to avoid glitches and coax out a passing grade.

At this time, it is good to mention that if there is a time crunch, look over the test in advance. Use it to do a cursory search of the web and find general information about the topic to familiarize with the topic. After the hours for a full review become available, then log into the website, using the test as a study guide, and go through the literature. While good prep for most therapists, these classes are usually have little new material to cover.

Online CEU courses for MFT license holders is the best way to go. No more plane tickets or travel to some remote hotel only to sit in one or two of a collection of irrelevant classes. In the therapist's private time, at home, even in their pajamas, CEU classes can be had over the internet, completed and off the to do list. It's so much easier now.
