They do it because their seniors in faith have asked them to perform it. They do them more out of a sense of duty or out of fear for being reprimanded. The reform was suggested to highlight the importance of knowing about each service and about the liturgy.
This practice is common not just in Christianity but in almost all the religions across the world. The scriptures are all in languages that were used in earlier days and with which people are no longer familiar. Yet, very few people make efforts to try to understand the depth of its teachings.
People often blindly follow what their elders ask them to do, or what religious men ask them. Nobody questions the basis or the significance behind such ceremonies or events. It is not that they would be cheating people or doing something unlawful. But such tendencies give rise to blind faith, which leads to people becoming fanatics about their religion.
