By Christopher Evans

The Freedom of Information Act has mandated the local government of a state to allow its people to gain access to their public documents. Ohio divorce records are just one of the many public documents that the residents of Ohio can access. This document is made whenever a couple decides to part ways because of unresolved conflicts.

A divorce record in the state of Ohio contains information about the separation of a married couple. One would be able to know the names of the involved individuals. Details such as the date and place where the separation took place are also indicated on the file. However, not all important details about the separation are found on the public document. This includes the reason for the separation as well as the division of properties and custody of the children if there are any. This was done to respect the privacy f the individuals as well as to protect them from public scrutiny.

All of the public documents of the Ohio are being archived at the office of the Department of Health under the Vital Statistics office. This is where divorce records are being managed. Although the office manages the documents, one would not be able to get a certified copy from the state office. The office can only help you figure out where the divorce was granted and can guide you through in requesting for the document at the local county where the divorce was granted.

One can only get certified copies of the document from the county where the divorce was legalized. Fees have to be paid but it depends on the county where it was filed. The fee would also depend on the information provided by the requesting individual. It would cost more if only little information provided because the search may take a while and can become complicated. Local county office has kept records since 1949, prior to this year, records has to be requested at the office of the Court of Common Pleas.

To make the search faster and cheaper, one should be able to provide information about the separation of a couple such as the names of the people involved and the details of the separation. Depending on the completeness of the information provided, the retrieval of the document would usually take 2-3 weeks. Although it is a public document, only the involved individuals are allowed to get a certified copy of the said file.

With the help of the Internet, it is now easier to get a copy of marriage and divorce records. The search has been made convenient for many. Going to any office to file the request has been eliminated thus making the search convenient and fast. The wait time has also been improved since it can be obtained in just seconds instead of days.
