Choosing English Mastiff Breeders To Work With

By Mamie Conrad

English Mastiffs or simply the Mastiffs are a large type of dog from Great Britain. They are believed to have originated from the ancient Alaunt and the dogs of Roman Britain. Theirs is a very interesting heritage. That is why many have also become interested in becoming English Mastiff breeders in PA to show off their knowledge and skills about the dogs.

This large breed can be compared to the Irish Wolfhound or the Great Dane which are known to be the tallest dogs. Mastiffs are the heaviest dogs on earth, recognized for their massive black masked heads that are often square shaped. Despite their muscular appearance though, these dogs remain one of the most gentle.

They are very friendly towards their friends and their owners. However, they are also known for their protective attitude. Since their ancestors were trained for physical activities, it is not unlikely for the Mastiffs to become aggressive when needed. That is why training should be rendered to control these pets.

Mastiffs are known to be very docile. They rarely even bark, even in the presence of intruders. They keep the intruders away by cornering them or using their heavy weight to outwit the strangers. It is necessary for the owners to train their Mastiffs well socially so that they will not become aloof with strangers and attacks will not be likely.

Female Mastiffs are also difficult to make pregnant. No wonder why breeders charge higher for the puppies they sell. A female Mastiff can only give birth three times. The largest litter ever recorded in history was that produced by a Neapolitan Mastiff. Two year old Tia gave birth to 25 puppies, 20 of which lived.

It is very important for a breeder to put very close attention to the dogs when they are being bred. The age should be very well considered, not less than 18 months but not more than 6 years too. It is very important to look for a breeder whose reputation in the dog world is known. Breeders should not be profit oriented, considering how difficult it is to breed Mastiffs.

Clients must look for certain qualities in all of the breeders they consider. They need to look for someone who is quite knowledgeable about the entire process. Clients must ask them questions pertaining to the normal appearance, temperament, training and care methods for the breed to evaluate their expertise.

A breeder must also make sure he or she provides the best environment for the dogs. The environment has an impact on the development of the personality of the dogs. That is why for Mastiffs, there should be adequate space available for playing around since these dogs love to be physical from time to time.

Many people are becoming English Mastiff breeders in PA. However, since not all of them are the same, you need to do comparisons. Be mindful about their facilities, their knowledge as well as their credentials. If they already have puppies to sell, get to know the pedigree to get an idea on the quality of puppies you are about to buy.
